SDYS launched the Opus Project in 2010 in partnership with the Chula Vista Elementary School District to make music education affordable and accessible for elementary school students.

The Community Opus Project began as a free after-school instrumental music instruction program at two schools, and grew each year to serve more schools. The positive effects of learning music were quickly apparent and within three years, the School District made the decision to reinstate its district-wide music program which had been cut more than 15 years earlier. For the 2013/14 school year, more than 3,000 students were receiving music lessons.
